i've been thinking about the recent phenomenon prevalent in the community. its the recent obsession with getting sponsored.
lets think about the reasons why teams get sponsored :
1) they are gosu
2) they have some other selling point that the sponsor can tap into

what i've seen so far is that many teams want a sponsor, any sponsor. these sponsors range from lanshops to equipment selling companies, and they are expected to cough up some money for team paraphenalia, competition fees etc. i feel that this has somehow diluted the role of a sponsor in its original sense cos as long as a company / individual contributes a little amount to the good of the team, its called a sponsor. isnt a sponsor supposed to ensure that all fees are waived, pay for every little team thing etc, rather than selectively indicating what can be covered and what cant? in some instances, sponsors even pay you to play, think Fatal1ty and other korean gosus. or nearer home, malaysian paulyan`.

i guess, if you are a half past six team, you'll probably get a half past six sponsor.
getting a sponsor just for the sake of getting a sponsor, is really... not worth it, cos in the end, you could be obligated to do stuff that you dont want to do without actually getting anything worthwhile in return.

sponsorship in its true sense, isnt gonna happen in singapore for a while. unless there are truly gosu teams out there for worldwide popular games.
it just seems that both players and companies alike are just tapping into this new market of partial sponsorship for the heck of it. but in the end, what real advertising does the company get if the team isnt good, or what perks does the team get if the company doesnt cover most team expenses?

sorry... i'm a little woozy from my late night and contemplating stuff cos of the micronology X3M thing. i'm not against them or anything, it just made me think about the while issue of sponsors. in fact, i'm pretty neutral to them being added to our family.
